Bathroom vanity size 40 in to 49 in single sink painted 42

A 40 to 49 inch painted single sink bathroom vanity is the size you choose when a 36-inch cabinet is not quite enough and a double sink is more than the room can carry. It is the most underrated width in the catalog: one basin, but a genuinely generous countertop and noticeably more drawer and cabinet volume than the standard 36. This collection covers the painted finishes in that range — 42 in. and 48 in. widths, in Willow's painted lines.

Why 42 and 48 inches work so well

The jump from 36 to 42 inches buys usable counter, not just wall coverage. There is finally room to set down a tray, a soap dish and a hair tool at once without stacking them around the basin. At 48 inches, a single-sink layout gives you an expanse of open stone that a 48-inch double sink cannot match — which is exactly why many people who could fit two basins deliberately choose one. If the bathroom is used by one person, or by two people at different times, the wide single is usually the more comfortable decision.

This range also solves a common remodeling problem. Mid-size bathrooms often have a five-foot wall run with a door or shower cutting into one end — too much space for a 36-inch vanity to look intentional, too little for a 60. A 42 or 48 inch cabinet fills that wall properly and makes the room look designed rather than fitted.

What is under the paint

Willow's painted vanities are built in birch — solid birch frames and doors, with natural wood veneer over marine-grade, moisture-resistant plywood on the larger panels. It is kiln-dried before assembly and FSC-certified, and it is never MDF or particleboard.

That matters more than any other spec on the page. Most mass-market vanities use MDF or particleboard under the paint. In a photograph it looks identical; in a bathroom it swells at the base, bubbles along the edges and lifts the paint once steam and the odd plumbing drip get into it. Birch does not fail that way. Because these lines are painted rather than stained, they are birch — not solid teak or solid white oak, which are offered in our separate wood collections.

Designs in this collection

Painted 40–49 inch vanities span lines including Aberdeen, Boston, Paris, Alys, Charlotte, Nashville, Miami, Chicago, Malibu, Orlando and Atlanta, plus the freestanding reeded-front designs in Catalina and Sonoma, whose vertical grooves add shadow and texture to a wide cabinet face — an effect that reads especially well at 42 and 48 inches. A few 48-inch models are also offered in a double-basin layout. Door style and hardware finish vary by line, so check the individual product page for the design you are considering.

Color at this width

A 42 or 48 inch painted cabinet is large enough to set the tone for the whole bathroom. White and off-white keep a mid-size room bright and classic. Charcoal, black and navy give the vanity weight and make brass or matte-black hardware look deliberate. Green, gray and terracotta work well when the vanity is meant to be the one piece of color in an otherwise neutral room. Because the cabinet occupies more visual space at this size than a 30-inch does, it is worth choosing the finish before the tile rather than after.

Countertops

The top is stone, never wood. Quartz and natural Carrara marble are the widely selectable options, with quartzite, travertine or terrazzo available depending on the design, each with a coordinating backsplash and a mitered or cove edge. The countertop ships in its own protective box and the undermount basin is set at install.

Frequently asked questions

What are these painted 40–49 inch vanities made of?

Birch — solid birch frames and doors with natural wood veneer over marine-grade, moisture-resistant plywood on the larger panels. It is kiln-dried and FSC-certified, and never MDF or particleboard. Most mass-market vanities use MDF or particleboard beneath the paint, which is why those cabinets swell and delaminate in a humid bathroom. The painted lines are birch rather than solid teak or solid white oak; those species are offered in our separate wood collections.

Is 42 or 48 inches better for a mid-size bathroom?

Measure the clear wall run first, then subtract a few inches of breathing room at each end. If you have roughly four and a half feet of uninterrupted wall, a 48-inch vanity will fit and look properly scaled; at around four feet, choose the 42. The 48 gives you meaningfully more counter and storage, but the 42 is the safer pick when a door swing, toilet or shower glass intrudes on the run. Both are far more comfortable in daily use than a 36.

Should I get a wide single sink or a double sink at 48 inches?

Choose the single if one person uses the bathroom, or if two people use it at different times — you get one long, uninterrupted stretch of countertop, which is more useful day to day than a second basin you rarely need. Choose the double only if two people genuinely share the bathroom at the same moment each morning. At 48 inches two basins fit, but they sit close together and leave little counter between them, so most people are happier with the wide single at this width.

What countertops are available on a 40–49 inch painted vanity?

The countertop is stone. Quartz and natural Carrara marble are the widely selectable options, with quartzite, travertine or terrazzo offered depending on the design, each with a coordinating backsplash and a mitered or cove edge. The stone list varies by model, so check the product page for the specific vanity. White quartz on a charcoal or navy painted base is the most requested combination in this range.

Do these vanities arrive assembled?

The cabinet arrives fully assembled, with drawers and soft-close hardware already fitted — there is no flat-pack building to do. The countertop ships separately in its own protective box, and the undermount basin is set when the top is installed. On site the job is placing the vanity, setting the top and connecting the plumbing. At 42 to 48 inches the piece is heavy, so plan on two people to move it into position.
